How to Make your New Years Resolution Come True

The year is quickly coming to an end and I know we are all thinking about our New Years resolution. This is a hard decision in a way because we want to set goals that we can realistically reach. So we look back on what we did this year and see if we achieved the new years resolution we set last year. If you are like me your answer is yes and no. I always set more than one goal. So if I achieve one of my goals in the beginning of the year I have something else to work towards the rest of the year.

goals.png

So when setting my goals they are not something I think of in 20 minutes and decide that is what I am going to do. My resolutions have to meet a few specifications such as…

  1. Is it realistic?
Is there an actual possibility that I could achieve this goal in 365 days while also living a life.
  2. In 5 years with this goal have made a difference in my life?
If I lose 20 pounds this year but in 5 years have gained one hundred then that 20 pound weight loss doesn’t really matter. But if I transition my eating and activity habits to incorporate more healthy decisions then continuing those habits in 5 years will make a difference.
  3. How will it effect others?
Losing 20 pounds benefits yourself but having a healthier eating habit may encourage others around you to eat healthy as well.
  4. How important is it to me?
Personally I am more motivated to achieve a goal if it is important to me. Don’t make your new years resolutions about pleasing others or trying to become someone your not.

Once I have created my list I then go back and check it several times. After I know everything on my list is 100% staying on my list then I add in details. Details are important because then you know in six months what you were talking about when you said get healthy. Ok I ate a salad today thats healthy so check it off the list. NO! Add details in, set a set when you want to have it completed by, where your going to do it, with who, and why.

Example: In the year 2017 I, Marissa, want to live a healthier life style. I want to incorporate my boyfriend and encourage him to be healthy as well. I want to eat healthy meals and get involved in more physical activity. I will learn one new healthy recipe a week and expand my meal prep options. I will also participate in seven hours of physical activity a week. I understand it may take time to fit this into my schedule so I will give myself till April 1st to work up to seven hours of physical activity a week.

When thinking of your new years resolutions don’t set yourself up to fail. Truly take an hour to sit down and think about your goals and objectives for 2017. Then write it out, type it up, and get creative. Just document your goals and dead lines in a way to motivate yourself to achieve your new years resolutions. Another thing you could do it encourage other to hold you accountable. Tell them to nag you about thing you want to change or goals you want to achieve.

I hope all of this helps you and gets you thinking in more detail about your goals for the new year. Leave a comment below of something you want to achieve for 2017 so others can get ideas and get inspired. One of my goals is to build a better blog and become a better blogger. Also to do some pretty awesome and unique DIYs on 2017.

I have Exciting News

I have decided that I don’t want to be just another fish in the sea, I want to make waves. I have never settled at an average life and now that I am graduating college that is exactly what I am afraid of becoming. So in order to prevent that from happening I have decided I want to take ACTION.

holiday-shindig

I want 2017 to be the best year of my life yet and in order for that to happen I don’t want to sit back and wait for opportunities to approach me. So I have decided to further pursue my ‘career’ in blogging my starting my own blog. Yes that is correct.

Im starting my own blog!

I have decided to launch my own website which will host my blog and be an upgraded and even better version of my blog today. In January 2017 I will have my blog on the internet to share with all of you. I know it is going to take a lot of work and dedication but I truly love blogging and want to continue as I take the next big step in my life after college.

In a little over three months I will have been blogging for a year and I want to continue for many more year. Blogging means a lot to me, while it is a lot of work on the back end it is totally worth it. Blogging inspires me to research and learn. It give me a creative outlet to share all my thought with other like minded people like myself. All of you motivate me to try new things in life and being able to share them with all of you makes it even better.

I have a lot of plans for my new blog and I hope all of you will continue with me on this lovely journey called life. I try appreciate each and every one of you. Reading your comments and seeing your support makes me so happy.

One of my main new years resolutions to create so much more content not only on my blog but also on my social media accounts as well.

So I would love all of your support and love it if you could comment something you want to see on my blog.

Life Update

2016

When I was a kid my mom always told me that the older I get the faster time will fly. Well she is completely correct. 2016 is almost over and it has went so fast. I have been reflecting back on this year and it is hard to believe how much has changed in my life. This year was full of mile stones and while so much has happened this year I know next year will be just as exciting if not more.

I started out the year by turning 21. My birthday is January 10th so my birthday is what I get to look forward to after new years. I celebrated with my boyfriend. He planned the whole day with fun activities. We went to sky max, then later that night we went out for dinner and drinks.

Then in March I started my blog and I can honestly say it was a great idea. I haven’t been creating as much content as I would have liked but I decided I needed to do more research about blogging so I can make it better for you guys. I just want to say a quick thank you to everyone for supporting me and it truly means a lot to know that my hard work is helping others. You are truly the reason I blog and I have been working hard behind the scenes to make my blog better for you. So now that I am at a good point in my research I have a very exciting announcement to make about my blog that will be coming in the next couple weeks. If you enjoy my blog and want to continue on this wonderful journey with me keep an eye out for my exciting announcement.

In May my spring semester of my junior year came to an end and I celebrated by taking a week long trip to New York City. It was a good trip but I was happy to be home and back in the swing of things after a week.

I then spent my summer ‘break’ by getting ahead in school and taking classes, working at the pool, and working on my blog. I ended summer by taking another vacation. I went on a cruise to the Caribbean. It was the best vacation I have ever taken. Not only was the destination amazing but the people I went with made the trip even better. There was a group of ten of us who went and it was a blast the entire week.

Sadly the vacation came to an end all to quickly and school started once again in August, but this time I was excited to start the semester. This is my last semester in school and I will be graduating December 17th with my Bachelors of Science and Technology degree. My major is Organizational Supervision and while I was in a tough situation when I chose this degree I am glad I pursued it. Not only was this semester great because it was the last but I took some very interesting classes as well. My two favorite classes this semester were Ceramics: Introduction to throwing and Principals of Social media.

In September I decided to make a major life change and quit my job and start working for my family business. I am now working as their social media marketer when I am not busy with  school and will continue to work their after I graduate.

I also made my first adult purchase in October and bought myself a car. I got a 2016 Nissan Rogue. I was planning on buying a car after graduation but when my other car started to have transmission problems I had to expedite my purchase date.

Now it is December and I am finishing my last week of classes. This semester has went so fast. Graduating college is a bitter sweet moment. I am so excited to graduate but at the same time I am nervous because it means a new chapter of my life is starting. I have so many plans for after graduation that I cannot wait to share with all of you.

4 Steps to Acing Your Interview

Recently I was searching for a new part time job and I quickly realized that I was not prepared. All of the jobs I have worked have been lifeguarding jobs and I wanted to branch out and gain more experience. I was working a lifeguarding job on campus but would no longer be able to work there after I graduate in December. I wanted to find another job off campus to gain more experience and guarantee I have a job after graduation. When I started my job search I thought it would be easy but quickly realized it wasn’t. After countless applications and many interviews I have a new job in marketing and I am excited to see where it takes me.

Throughout my experience I feel that I have become well educated in filling out applications and attending interviews. All of my interviews were one on one but these tips could easily be adjusted and applied to any interview setting. Since my interviews were for part time positions they were more laid back than they would be for a full time position so be prepared to step it up of your interviewing for a full time job.

Step #1 Preparation

Attire

It is important to look the part when going into an interview. Consider the job you are applying for and what you would be wearing on a daily basis to work. Invest in some interview attire that you only wear for interviews until you secure a job. This would ensure that your clothes look neat and clean and not run down. It is better to go into an interview over dressed than under dressed.  People often forget about shoes. Make sure that your shoes are polished and clean.

Research

Take time to look into the company before the interview. Check out their website and reviews of the company on other websites. Make sure you understand their mission statement and the products or services they offer. One thing I do is search the internet for employee reviews. Employees often review the company and their experience working there. Also look for recent news articles on the company. If anything bad has happened in the past it will most likely be covered in the news. Lastly make sure you fully know the job description and what the job entails. If there is something you are unclear of make a note of it so can ask about it during the interview. I will cover more about asking questions later on.

Another thing I do when looking into a company is directly ask employees questions. I applied for a job at target and ended up getting an interview. Before the interview I went to a different target location and ask and employee who was helping me. I asked simple non offensive questions that she was happy to answer. I simply informed her that I was thinking about applying to work there and was wondering what the staff experience was like. I was lucky she was happy to respond honestly but just be cautious as some employee will refuse to answer. I would also not recommend doing this in a small company.

Step #2 Right before the Interview

What to bring

Double check that you have everything you need before leaving for the interview. I always take a copy of my resume and/or the application, a small note pad and pen and a bottle of water. Also make sure that your pen is woking. When I arrive at my interview destination I take a small drink of water to make sure my mouth is not dry before the interview. When taking my resume I make sure that I have several copies of my cover letter, resume, and references. Having several copies would ensure that you have enough to give to everyone in the interview if there is more than one interviewer. Once again better to be over prepared than under.

Arriving

Never be late for an interview. I often map out the location then add 15 minutes for early arrival and add on an additional 20 or 30 minutes of travel time. That way if there is a traffic jam or road closure I have plenty of time to make it to the interview. If nothing occurs during traveling and I arrive very early I park in a parking lot near by and go over my questions I have prepared and make sure I have everything in order one last time. I also review information on the company and job description to make sure it is fresh in my mind. I generally arrive to the interview ten minutes early. This shows that you are time orientated.

Something else to remember is to silence your cell phone. You don’t want it to start to ring or vibrate during an interview. It is also very important to keep it out of sight. If you arrive early to the interview keep it away while you wait. Look around you or at the receptionist. I often learn things that I wouldn’t have from the website.

Introduction

From the moment you walk into the building until you return to your car remember to be polite to every one and keep a smile on your face. People often reveal what they are thinking through facial expressions without realizing it. When walking into an interview be sure to introduce your self and shake hands with your interviewer.

Step #3 During the Interview

These tips are simple but often go unnoticed. Body language during an interview is very important and can be the deciding factor in the hiring process.

Posture

Sit up straight and be confident. Not only will it make you look better but it will show the interviewer that you are professional and interested. Slouching in your chair gives your interviewer the message that you are relaxed but to relaxed and possibly uninterested.

Show Expression

When the interviewer is talking nodding will show the interviewer you are interested and still listening. Also keep in mind your facial expression. Smiling and engaging through body language during the interview is very important.

Hand Gestures

Use hand gestures when speaking but don’t go over board. Also be aware of your surroundings so you do not hit anything.

Collect Information

Not only do you want to ask questions you have about the job and company but also contact information. Remember that note pad you brought into the interview, if you haven’t used it yet you will now. Get the name, phone number and/or email address of the person interviewing you. This may sound strange but keep reading to find out why this is important.

Step#4 After the Interview

The interview does not end until you drive off the lot. After the interview you get in your car and sit there, people may still be watching you from inside. Once you pull out of the parking lot and onto the road your interview is over.

Follow up

Later in the same day as the interview send a thank you email. Email the person or people who interview you. Simply tell them who you are and thank them for taking time out of their day to interview you and then inform them that you are looking forward to hearing from them soon and are also looking forward to hopefully working with the company.

Then if you do not hear back after a week follow up again with another email or a phone call. I personally call and once again thanking them. I feel that a phone call shows initiative and is more personal. It can help the interviewer remember you and then if they answer it forces them to talk to you and most often they will tell you the status of your application or if they decided to go with someone else.

YOU GOT THIS

At the end of the day going into the interview and knowing you did your best is all that matters. If you don’t get the job keep trying.

Why I Haven’t Been Blogging

I didn’t realize blogging would be so much work but it was love at first post.

I started this blog because I love to create things and wanted to share them with the world. When I first started my blog I made a long list of DIYs I wanted do and got so excited. As the weeks went on it seemed more like work and became less enjoyable so I left. I new I needed to take a step back and think about what I wanted this blog to be and where I was going to take it. Doing DIY after DIY because I needed a blog post turned my passion into a chore. I didn’t have the motivation or fun like I did when I first started. I knew I didn’t want to quit my blog but I didn’t know how I would continue. I finally realized my blog went from doing this for myself to doing it for other people. That is when I told myself I would blog for me. I would share not only my DIYs but my experiences. I have this amazing life I am living and to only share DIYs got boring quick.

So I re-evaluated and made a new plan.

I am still Createlynn but I am also Marissa. I have a life just like everyone else. I have some ups and downs and good times and bad. I realized that there are events happening in my life that many other people around the world may also be experiencing. So my new plan that I have is to have fun, make some awesome stuff, but also live, laugh, love/hate, and share life. I am going to add more lifestyle into my blog along with DIYs. So if you want to see more DIYs along with my life then follow my blog because I have some pretty cool stuff planned.

Funny Story/ Im horrible

This post is going to be about my week and how I am a horribly unorganized person. Basically I am going to be making fun of myself and giving you guys sneak previews of what is coming in the next couple weeks. Plus there is a little bonus behind the scenes of how I run my blog/life.

So where do I start hmmm… I guess with things I unfortunately have to do. Every day this week I have had school and work. If you didn’t know this or would like to know. I am a Lifeguard at the REC on campus and I work the opening shift. Unfortunately for me I have to wake up at 5 am (it really isn’t that bad) but this weekend I had four days off of school and work and my sleeping schedule got all messed up. I slept like crap. Usually I’m in bed between 10 and 11 pm and I think the earliest I got to bed all weekend was 12:30. Then on top of it I actually slept in for once, till 11 am. I can never do that! So my sleeping schedule got all messed up and now its Thursday and I was late to work this morning because I slept through my alarm. Then I had a meeting then I had to go straight to class. After class I usually have my after noons off so I have been working out and crafting and other fun summer activities. Well today I had a second shift and only had a short break after class. Yes incase you were wondering I am typing this at work. Don’t worry I am working the desk today so I am not lifeguarding right now. But yes basically I am very tired and I have been working on stuff all week getting ready for the weekend.

Next: Adulting and my life style change
I try very hard at this part but sometimes it gets little rough. As you all know I went to New York City a couple weeks ago and this week I finally unpacked my suitcase and decided I needed to do laundry. Actually my clothes decided I needed to do laundry or else I was going to have to get my winter clothes back out and its been in the high 80’s this week so no thank you. Finally after two days I got my laundry done. Someone really needs to invent a dryer that folds clothes. I also did some much needed cleaning around my house. Adulating? Check!
Also this week I ate some pretty healthy meals. I used apples and bananas for my snacks this week. I ate oatmeal or oatmeal bars for breakfast. Lunch was usually chicken and veggies or salad with chicken on it. One nutrient I have been trying to add into my diet this week is Omega 3. These help a lot with my acne and skin health. You can get this through fish as well as chia seeds and flax seeds. I have been putting chia seeds on my salad. You can also put them in your water, smoothies, bread, and a lot of other foods. They don’t have much flavor and when I do taste them they taste like sunflower seeds. Now that my gym is open again I can work out so I have an hour break between work and class so I am utilizing that free time to get an easy work out in. I have been doing some light lifting and cardio. I also add in an ab circuit. It is very simple but effective and I will share it with you. This doesn’t dramatically cut my stomach but it makes me sore and when I think it is getting easier I up the reps.

Ab work out: (I am not a personal trainer or fitness coach this is just what I do myself)
– 30 second plank
– 30 regular crunches
– 30 leg lifts
– 30 second plank
– 30 seconds of air flitter kicking
– 40 Russian twists
– 30 second plank

I also like to switch it up with a plank work out that I will post at a later time. The ab workout above it what I try to do three times a week. Its simple and short but effective. I don’t always do it when I am at the gym it all depends on my time and energy level at the time. What I like to do is do it during the commercial when Im watching tv. If you really want to hit abs hard you could do this workout every commercial during your favorite tv show. All you would have to do is change the reps so start by doing 50 of each at your own pace then work you way down every commercial. So do 50 reps the first commercial then 40, 30, 20, 10. If your show isn’t over and you want to keep the burn up then start going back up (10, 20,30,40).

DIY

Recently I have started making wreaths and selling them. I mostly sell them to people from my home town and in the area I live now. I haven’t sold many but I am working to sell more. I am lucky that my mom owns her own business and a lot of her customers buy things that I make. What I do is I take them home and she sells them for me. Thank you mom! This weekend I am going home for a visit and I am taking all my wreaths. I set a goal for myself to make ten wreaths this week and I am pretty close. Tonight I plan to finish up a couple and hopefully make a couple more tomorrow. Because I have been focusing on wreaths I haven’t made many other things and it is totally killing my creative vibe. So after these next two days I am taking a break from wreath making and getting back into some other stuff. I plan to do some fun summer DIYs and I am considering doing a five day series of summer DIY must haves. Like this post if you would like to see that.

Future posts (roughly)

First off I want to apologize for not posting my weekly DIYs. I know I have been slacking, no excuses. I know I have been making a lot of lifestyle posts lately and I am going to try to balance those out with DIY posts as well.

So this is where I get to share some of my secrets and behind the scenes to this blog. I usually put little planning into my posts. Mostly I have an idea, plan a tiny bit, type up my post, make some changes, and then publish it. I used to use my monthly calendar and plan out for the month what DIYs I was going to post and have them published by Monday. Now that summer has started and my schedule has changed I haven’t been doing that. Also my planner ran out since it was an academic planner. I live in my planner, it is the bible of my life. If any one ever wanted to stalk me or know all my secrets forget the diary just find my planner. To fix my no planner problem and save money I made my own planner. I found the templates on line and printed them out. I will be making a post about my DIY planner as soon as I have it all completed.

Along with my DIY planner I am going to make a post about 7 ways to be more productive.  For my post about being productive I did some research and planning. I watched videos, read articles, and even tracked what I did. As I was preparing for this post I realized that I am not very productive and fall victim to distractions, procrastinations, and multi tasking. Thats right multi-tasking diminishes productivity. I decided until I was more productive I would not make this post because I feel that it would have a better blog post if I was more productive. So I am putting in more effort in having productive days and getting stuff done.

As I mentioned earlier in the post I am planning on doing 5 days of summer DIY must haves. I am still working out the details of that post but I can tell you everything is going to be super cute and nothing like what I have done before. But that is all the sneak previews I am going to give you about that because I don’t want to spoil the surprise.

YouTube! YOUTUBE. YouTube?

I know. I know I have been writing about youtube a lot lately. Incase you didn’t know I am a millennial and I am going through the stereotypical millennial life crisis right now. I am graduating in six months and I have no fracking clue what I want to do after graduation. I am at the cross roads in my life between childhood and adult life and honestly it scares the crap out of me. I have been watching youtube since before it became big. I always wanted to have my own channel and create videos. When I was younger I even took videos of myself pretending to be a youtuber. Now that I am older and wiser, I have realized that I am 100% capable of having/making…Creating my own youtube channel. Once again I am scared. Its intimidating ok! I don’t know why it scares me and is so intimidating to me and blogging isn’t though. I honestly sit here and type my posts for anyone in the world to read as if I am sitting in a coffee shop talking to you as if we have know each other for years. When I blog I am eager to share ideas and even just tell you all whats going on in my life. Im not scared or worried what you will think. When it comes to me sitting in front of a camera and telling my life story for everyone to see and hear me then I get shy and clam up.

I know that if I create a channel there will be some haters or negative people but I also know that there will be far more positive people. I also hope that some of you would watch my videos and support me. I need to just gain the confidence to make that first video and upload it. Its a lot easier said than done though.

Well thats all for today. I know this post was long and I really appreciate it if you read the whole thing. Also if you did and red the part about youtube, comment a video you would like to see from me. It can be a DIY, about my life, even a blog I have already made just as a video. If you don’t have any requests then please comment some words of wisdom or motivation for me to start my channel. Remember I do this for you guys and love getting feedback from you. It truly makes my day a lot better when I get on my computer and see that you all like what I write.

Up Coming Projects in April

Great News!

I ordered 400 more scrabble tiles and they came in today. I wish I would of ordered this many from the beginning but oh well lesson learned. I ordered them again from Amazon and I did the math and figured it was cheeper to order the bags of 200 letters. Tonight I will be making more scrabble coasters. Yay! Sometime this week I will post pictures of how they all turned out.

Also I thought I would let you all know that I planned out my DIY project for this month and I am pretty excited of what we have to come. I don’t want to spoil the surprise so I am going to give you hints of what the projects will be. This week we will be making some unique lights. So keep an eye out for that post tomorrow. Then next week will be a pretty large post with many possibilities. So get those creative juices flowing and start thinking of some themes that you could easily decorate with. Then after that we will be making more coasters but not with scrabble letters this time.

On another note yesterday I went to one of our local thrift stores that I absolutely love. This store is called the Restore and they take donations and sell them. Then all the money goes to charity. So why not shop and have your money go to a great cause. In this store they always have unique things. This isn’t your typical book and clothing thrift store, oh no no no. The Restore has everything from spray foam to chandeliers to furniture to door knobs. Its amazing the things you’ll find in here and this week I hit the jack pot. They had a whole bunch of tile and it was only $0.05 a piece. So obviously I had to buy a whole bunch and I already know what Im going to make with it. You’ll just have to wait and find out.
